THE POSITION: Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to the maintenance, operation, inspection, troubleshooting and repair of the City’s wastewater collection systems. This position is responsible for operating equipment, including hydro vactor trucks; videoing wastewater mains and laterals; repairing/installing manholes and monitoring toxic gasses in manholes and vaults; and performing lift station maintenance. Additionally, the incumbent clears blockages in wastewater collection systems; ensures proper decontamination and containment during and after wastewater upsets, and inspects assigned areas and corrects or reports safety hazards; and performs snow removal and traffic control duties as needed. A successful candidate in this position will be required to work nights, weekends and holidays, respond to after-hours emergency callouts and perform routine standby duties.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate will possess a knowledge of practices, techniques, and materials used in the day-to-day operation, maintenance, cleaning inspection, mechanics, and repair of wastewater collection systems. Additionally, this candidate would have the ability to operate and maintain tools and equipment used in the construction, maintenance, cleaning, inspection, and documentation related to wastewater collection systems. A successful candidate will also have the skill to interpret and apply relevant regulations, codes, and guidelines related to wastewater collection systems. This person should also be able to work individually and as part of a team, communicate clearly and concisely, follow written and oral instructions, and observe safety principles and work in a safe manner.
QUALIFICATIONS:
(The following are the minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification.)
Education/Experience: A High School Diploma or equivalent, and possession of the equivalent of one (1) year of experience in public works related maintenance and construction activities are required. At least one (1) year of experience specifically in the wastewater collection systems, plumbing trade and/or closely related semi-skilled trade work is preferred.
License/Certificate: Possession of a valid class B California driver license (with relevant endorsements) is required. Obtaining a CWEA Grade 1 Collection System Maintenance Certificate within 12 months of appointment, is also required.

Retirement: The City is a member of the San Bernardino County Employees’ Retirement Association (SBCERA) which is reciprocal with Cal PERS. The City’s retirement formula is 2% @ 55 with prior qualifying public service or effective January 1, 2013 the formula is 2.5% @ 67 for new participants.
Salary/Compensation: $28.42 - $34.55 per hour
