Fire Chief

The City of Elmira is currently recruiting for a full-time Fire Chief who will supervise the operation and maintenance of the fire department. Currently, the city employs a total of 56 employees in the department, and there are 3 fire stations within the city.

Duties include but are not limited to, training personnel in modern firefighting practice and use of equipment, the care and maintenance of equipment and recommendation for purchase of new apparatus and supplies. Work on the operating and capital budget for the department. Knowledge of Code and Fire Inspections. This position will be required to apply for grants and maintain all necessary paperwork for each grant. The Chief will also work with Civil Service and interview, recruit and conduct an extensive background check on future job candidates.

Required skills include knowledge of city streets, waters supply, building construction, Mutual Aid Response and Coordination, buildings, hydrants, watermain, electric lines; thorough knowledge of modern firefighting techniques; ability to supervise and secure cooperation of subordinates; mechanical aptitude; alertness and leadership. Applicants should have a maximum of 15 years of firefighting experience and have served in a leadership role. This is an appointed position with the City of Elmira by the City Manager.
