JOB TITLE: Distribution System Operator
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-Time, Non-exempt, Non-Union
GENERAL SUMMARY: This position is responsible for Water Distribution operations, including maintenance of water valves, meters, and hydrants. Under the general supervision of the Water Utility Foreman and Water Foreman and is evaluated by the Water Foreman based on the achievement of essential duties and goals.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (Listed examples may not include all duties of the position) • Performs services in the field relating to the correct operations of the water distribution system • Responsible for repairing the water distribution system during & after normal scheduled hours • Familiarity with regulations and safety procedures regarding water utility operations • Operates dump trucks as required • Operates vacuum trailer, loaders, and backhoes as needed for system maintenance • Performs hydrant maintenance, installation and flushing. • Responsible for water valve maintenance • Installs new services, curbstops, service & gate valve boxes • Repairs all types of water breaks • Performs meter maintenance, as needed • Performs as part of the “Street Crew” on call rotating schedule after 6 months or properly trained whichever comes first
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPOSIBILITIES: • Operates heavy equipment including, loaders, backhoes, dump truck, utility vehicles, and vacuum trailer • Adheres to Kittery Water District written operating procedures and policies. • Performs other related duties as assigned.
PREPARATION, KNOWEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: • Duties require knowledge of water maintenance and construction equivalent to completion of a high school diploma and one to three years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Must possess a valid State Operator’s license, a valid State CDL Class B with air brake certification • Must possess a Grade I Water Distribution and/or Water Treatment Operator license, or ability to obtain in 1 year. • Duties require knowledge of the water distribution systems and sewer collection systems. • Work with limited direction. • Communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally. • Establish a working knowledge of applicable state and local regulations, procedures, and statutes.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: • Work is performed outdoors in extreme weather conditions, at night occasionally as needed, around fumes, chemicals, and toxic substances. • Physical demands include traversing rough terrain, climbing in and out of culverts and ditches, climbing in and out of heavy machinery, performing heavy manual labor, lifting heavy (25lbs or over) objects, standing, sitting, stooping, and walking.
Starting pay range from $33.36 - 35.39 depending on experience. Required training and licensing for the job will be paid for by the District.
